Dog-Friendly Lisbon: Restaurants & Sights
This is a collection of my favorite restaurants, drinking spots, and sights in Lisbon! I was living in Mouraria, so almost all of these establishments are located near the city center. Most restaurants in Portugal are open for a few hours for lunch, then close in the late afternoon, and re-open for dinner. Also, a lot of small, family-owned places close while they go on holidays in August - sometimes for a week, sometimes most of the month. So keep these things in mind as you plan your vacation! Outdoor drinking:
This is one of my very favorite places to drink and enjoy the sunshine in Lisboa! A series of long steps going right down to the river; you can buy drinks at the quiosque or one of the carts, or bring your own.
Across from Praça do Comércio, you’ll find a platform with steps that lead down to the river, between two columns. There is almost always live music here, and you can bring your own wine or gelato to enjoy while people-watching, dancing, or chatting. I don’t recall ever seeing drinks being sold here, but there are plenty of wine and liquor stores nearby.
This is a prime area for drinking and partying in Lisbon! It may get a little too crazy on weekend nights for a pup, but earlier evenings or week days would be fun. Lots of bars have windows you can purchase to-go drinks from and carry them with you. There are plenty of restaurants and bars with outdoor seating in this area as well.
Miradouros (view points) are the greatest spots for wine and chillin’ with your doggo! See the list below for more information.
Avenue de Liberdade
This large, beautiful avenue down the middle of the city center has several tree-covered quiosques offering food and drink.
Outdoor seating with fado music!
Square right next to Carmo Convent with a quiosque serving drinks, and several restaurants with outdoor seating across the street.
Miradouros
A miradouro is a viewpoint, usually on a hill, that has tables and chairs and gorgeous views. They often have quiosques offering coffee, wine, beer, breakfast, and snacks. Many of them also have really cool tile murals that mirror the view behind them. Here are some of our favorites!
This is one of my absolute favorite spots to drink wine and enjoy the sunshine! This quiosque offers quite a variety of beverages, and some snacks. The view over Alfama is absolutely beautiful! I recommend stopping here after touring the castle - it’s a short walk with really cool street art along the way!
Located right next to Portas do Sol, this miradouro is covered in blue azulejos (Portugese tile), beautiful columns, and brightly colored flowers that are all ótimo for a photo shoot!
This is my favorite spot to enjoy a Lisboa sunset! The quiosque here has plenty of tables and many options for food and drink. There is also a long ledge to sit on while you watch the sun set behind the opposite hill and view the castle all lit up on top of the neighboring hill. Take the stairs up from Mouraria to see some of the best street art in the city!
Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara
There is an outdoor restaurant/quiosque with a plethora of food and drink options in this miradouro, and there are often art and crafts fairs set up here too! One of the funiculars of the city, Glória Funicular, runs just below it along a (very steep) road with awesome street art!
The highest natural point in Lisbon! A smaller, very popular (often very crowded) spot that is quite a hike to get to, unless you take a tuk-tuk (if you book through The Blue House, you can find a tuk-tuk that allows dogs!).
This miradouro is not as well-known as some others and doesn’t have a quiosque. But it does have lovely views and a unique look about it!
Another less-touristy miradouro with a quiosque serving snacks and drinks!
Sights & Tourism
Castelo de São Jorge
UPDATE - The castle no longer allows dogs anywhere on the grounds!!!! I was so disappointed to learn this when we visited in April 2024. I’m leaving my previous information about the castle here, in hopes they will come to their senses and allow dogs again in the future!
The castle at the top of the hill above Alfama and Mouraria is dog-friendly! Alice and I took every single visitor to the castle - it is probably my favorite tourist attraction in the city. I recommend making this one of your first stops in Lisbon, as it gives an incredible view of the city, the River Tejo, and the 25th of April Bridge. It provides a nice history of the city as well - and there’s wine!
Street Art
Lisboa is covered in amazing street art! The best places to view it are near Castelo de São Jorge, along Caracol de Graça leading up to the miradouro and church, and up Calçada do Glória next to one of the famous yellow funiculars. There are also plenty of beautiful pieces sprinkled throughout Alfama, Mouraria, and Graça. Our favorites are Fado Vadio (pictured below), Lisa, Fairey & Vhils collaboration, the Revolutionary Woman, and the mosaic portrait of Amália Rodrigues. And of course, the beautiful artwork of the azulejos in these neighborhoods is also stunning!
Shopping
A lot of shops do allow dogs - look for a “animais permitido” sign on the door ot ask before entering! Livraria Bertrand, a well-known book store in Baixa Chiado, is dog-friendly!
